How To Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine

Believe it or not we are just 5 weeks away from Spring! As much as I love the cozy feeling of Winter (hygge vibes anyone?) there's something so inspiring about the fresh start that Spring brings. Though Spring Cleaning generally refers to the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house this is a skincare-focused version. Either way, lets get to sudsing!

Step 1 - Survey the Situation

Toss anything that is expired, outdated or just no longer works for your skin. Products that are past their shelf life are prone to decompose and can be harmful to your skin. As a general rule of thumb cleansers, serums and moisturizers last about a year from the time they are opened. Just like food use your judgement and keep an eye on how the product looks, feels and smells.

Step 2 - Watch Out For Harsh Chemicals

Last year I did some freelance work for a major online publication— a few of my assignments were to research and recommend beauty products that were safe for women who were pregnant, trying to conceive or safe for kids to play dress up with. The experience was eye opening!

A few examples of chemicals in everyday products are parabens in foundation, aluminum in deodorant, synthetic fragrances in perfumes, and the one that disturbed me the most was formaldehyde in eyelash glue. Yikes! It's stuff that you may overlook unless you inform yourself by reading labels but so important to be aware of.

Conversely, one of the things that drew me to the Drunk Elephant skincare line is their commitment to eliminating what they refer to as the “Suspicious 6” ingredients in their products (Essential Oils, Drying Alcohols, Silicones, Chemical Screens, Fragrance/Dyes and SLS). Because they believe these ingredients are at the root of every skin issue they see, their products are amazing for even the most sensitive of skin types.

Think of Drunk Elephant like the Whole 30 diet. By eliminating ingredients that are likely to cause breakouts and irritation you can better narrow in on what does and doesn't work for your skin. I personally notice a difference from when I use only Drunk Elephant and when I add in other products that contain those ingredients.

Step 3 - Make It A Double

Double cleanse that is. Double cleansing is the back bone of many Korean beauty routines and has gained popularity in mainstream skincare as well. To try this nightly ritual start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to break down and remove makeup, dirt and impurities so the second cleanse (a water based cleanser) can really cleanse the skin. With a cleaner canvas your serums, moisturizers and oils can better penetrate the skin and work their magic overnight.

Be sure to modify based on your skin type— if your skin is prone to dryness one cleanse might be enough or alternate double cleansing days. In the AM, most beauty gurus skip the morning cleanse and just rinse with water since their face is already clean from the night before. For a little something extra try a face mist... my go-to is the evian Facial Spray which makes me feel instantly refreshed.

Step 4 - Go Beyond The Surface

Consistent cleansing is key but once a week rotate in something with a bit more potency for a deeper clean. From the Drunk Elephant brand the BabyFacial is definitely worth a go. This at-home facial contains 25% AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) and 2% BHA (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid) which acts to “unglue” bonds that hold dull, dead skin on the surface. Yes, please!

This mask stays on for 20 minutes and rinses off to give skin smoother texture, minimize the look of fine lines, wrinkles and pores and boosts overall clarity. It's the perfect way to end the weekend and start the week with a fresh face!

Step 5 - Try New Things

Once you've tossed the oldies, eliminated the baddies and cleansed your way to beautiful and healthy skin it's time for the fun part—newbies! Another awesome part of the Drunk Elephant skincare collection is their Littles Collection which includes miniature versions of their cult favorites like Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil and the T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum. Great skincare can be pricey so having the flexibility to try their products at a smaller volume and price-point really helps you find what ones make your skin glow. I've been enjoying the C-Firma™ Day Serum and the B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum.
