How To Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine

Believe it or not we are just 5 weeks away from Spring! As much as I love the cozy feeling of Winter (hygge vibes anyone?) there's something so inspiring about the fresh start that Spring brings. Though Spring Cleaning generally refers to the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house this is a skincare-focused version. Either way, lets get to sudsing!

Step 1 - Survey the Situation

Toss anything that is expired, outdated or just no longer works for your skin. Products that are past their shelf life are prone to decompose and can be harmful to your skin. As a general rule of thumb cleansers, serums and moisturizers last about a year from the time they are opened. Just like food use your judgement and keep an eye on how the product looks, feels and smells.

Step 2 - Watch Out For Harsh Chemicals

Last year I did some freelance work for a major online publication— a few of my assignments were to research and recommend beauty products that were safe for women who were pregnant, trying to conceive or safe for kids to play dress up with. The experience was eye opening!

A few examples of chemicals in everyday products are parabens in foundation, aluminum in deodorant, synthetic fragrances in perfumes, and the one that disturbed me the most was formaldehyde in eyelash glue. Yikes! It's stuff that you may overlook unless you inform yourself by reading labels but so important to be aware of.

Lala Retro™ Whipped Cream

Lala Retro™ Whipped Cream

Conversely, one of the things that drew me to the Drunk Elephant skincare line is their commitment to eliminating what they refer to as the “Suspicious 6” ingredients in their products (Essential Oils, Drying Alcohols, Silicones, Chemical Screens, Fragrance/Dyes and SLS). Because they believe these ingredients are at the root of every skin issue they see, their products are amazing for even the most sensitive of skin types.

Think of Drunk Elephant like the Whole 30 diet. By eliminating ingredients that are likely to cause breakouts and irritation you can better narrow in on what does and doesn't work for your skin. I personally notice a difference from when I use only Drunk Elephant and when I add in other products that contain those ingredients.

Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser

Step 3 - Make It A Double

Double cleanse that is. Double cleansing is the back bone of many Korean beauty routines and has gained popularity in mainstream skincare as well. To try this nightly ritual start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to break down and remove makeup, dirt and impurities so the second cleanse (a water based cleanser) can really cleanse the skin. With a cleaner canvas your serums, moisturizers and oils can better penetrate the skin and work their magic overnight.

Be sure to modify based on your skin type— if your skin is prone to dryness one cleanse might be enough or alternate double cleansing days. In the AM, most beauty gurus skip the morning cleanse and just rinse with water since their face is already clean from the night before. For a little something extra try a face mist... my go-to is the evian Facial Spray which makes me feel instantly refreshed.

Step 4 - Go Beyond The Surface

Consistent cleansing is key but once a week rotate in something with a bit more potency for a deeper clean. From the Drunk Elephant brand the BabyFacial is definitely worth a go. This at-home facial contains 25% AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) and 2% BHA (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid) which acts to “unglue” bonds that hold dull, dead skin on the surface. Yes, please!

This mask stays on for 20 minutes and rinses off to give skin smoother texture, minimize the look of fine lines, wrinkles and pores and boosts overall clarity. It's the perfect way to end the weekend and start the week with a fresh face!

Step 5 - Try New Things

Once you've tossed the oldies, eliminated the baddies and cleansed your way to beautiful and healthy skin it's time for the fun part—newbies! Another awesome part of the Drunk Elephant skincare collection is their Littles Collection which includes miniature versions of their cult favorites like Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil and the T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum. Great skincare can be pricey so having the flexibility to try their products at a smaller volume and price-point really helps you find what ones make your skin glow. I've been enjoying the C-Firma™ Day Serum and the B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum.

Beacon Chic's Fall Fashion Style Guide

I’ve been really into YouTube lately. Most of my favorite vlogs are just normal things people do—like cooking, cleaning their home, shopping and try-ons so I thought it would be cool to film one myself. What I realized is it’s really hard to describe outfits while also trying them on so this kind of just ended up being a fun little dance party :)

Styling notes after the clip!

Twist-Back Ribbed Dresses

Loving these Twist-Back Ribbed Dresses from Forever 21 (on sale $20)! They come in Burgundy, Heather Grey and Black. Lightweight, comfortable and really cute over leggings or just with boots. Paired these with Sofft boots from (been getting so many compliments on these).

Ribbed Sweater Dress

Obsessed with this Ribbed Sweater Dress in Light Heather Grey—also from Forever 21. The tie waist and longer hemline give it a more elegant feel while the slits keep it fresh and flirty (it’s sadly no longer on the site but check out some similar styles above and here). I styled mine dress with nude Sam Edelman booties to elongate my legs.

Teddy Coat

This post wouldn’t be complete without a cozy, teddy coat. Super happy with this Pure Navy one from Saks Off Fifth (currently on sale 30% off)! I feel like living in New England and being cold all the time is a lot more bearable with a cute coat and the hood is perfect for days when you get caught in the rain or snow.

A Chic Handbag

Authentic Fendi handbag, available on my Poshmark boutique.

4 Beauty Products I'm Fallin' For 💄💋

The Classic Blossom Palette by KKW Beauty 🌸

This was my first KKW Beauty purchase and I am loving it. What I like about having a palette is that it encourages you to try new looks outside of your comfort zone. The shades in this one are universally flattering and so much fun to play with because they all go really well together. I use Tarte concealer to prime my lid and the shadow stay intact all day ($45).

Lala Retro Whipped Cream Moisturizer by Drunk Elephant 🐘

First Drunk Elephant purchase and safe to say its worth the hype! Though I was perfectly happy with the moisturizer I had — I noticed a lot of beauty bloggers were raving about this one. One of the reasons I like shopping at Sephora is they are happy to give you samples so that you can try products before you buy. I’m into trying different things but I am definitely more cautious about trying new products on my face because my skin is sensitive. It took a few days to get used to this one but I did notice a visible improvement in the texture of my skin. I went away for few days and tried a different sample that did not work well for me at all. When I got back home I used the Lala Retro Whipped Cream again and my face cleared up practically overnight. Hands down the best $60 that I’ve spent at Sephora. This moisturizer costs more than the one I had before but my skin is in much better condition so I can use less primer, concealer and foundation. 100% recommend. I would consider this a thicker moisturizer (a necessity for New England winters) but Drunk Elephant’s Protini Polypeptide Cream may be a good option for those seeking something lighter.

Since I mentioned using less concealer and primer I just wanted to mention that I am still using and liking the Tatcha Skin Canvas Protective Primer (this has lasted me 6+ months) and the Tarte Creaseless Under Concealer (been using just about 3 months).

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil by Bumble and Bumble 💁🏻‍♀️

This was a recommendation from my hairdresser Kerri. She’s given me a lot of good tips like using quality shampoo/conditioner, washing hair with cold water and not as often. After a year of taking her advice my hair is a lot healthier and I’ve reversed damage that came from years of lightening. This invisible oil is a nice little addition to my routine. I use two pumps on damp hair and wait 10 minutes for it to soak in before drying and styling.

Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Dolly 💕

Top it all off with Full-On Plumping Lip Polish Gloss in Dolly (my go-to for shiny and full lips) 💕

5 Facts & Quotes from Italian Film Star Sophia Loren 🌹

🥀 She was raised in the slums of Pozzuoli during the second World War.

"Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent." - Sophia Loren

Her father was married to another woman and refused to marry her mother despite the fact that she was the mother of his two children Sophia and her sister, Maria.

As a result, Sophia experienced much sadness throughout her childhood. "I hated my father all my life but in his final days I forgave him for all the suffering he caused us. As you grow older, marry, and have children of you own, you learn and forget. I do not forget easily, but I do forgive." - Sophia Loren

🎬 Her life changed for the better when she entered a beauty contest at the age of 14 and placed as one of the finalists.

From there she caught the eye of film producer Carlo Ponti who helped guide her acting career and later became her husband. She credits Yvonne De Carlo as her inspiration for becoming an actress, "Oh, how I loved the movies as a little girl. Particularly I loved Yvonne De Carlo - she was my favorite. Others, too, like Rita Hayworth, but I used to dream that I was Yvonne De Carlo. And I liked that little one - what was her name? - June Allyson, too. But for me there was only one Yvonne De Carlo." - Sophia Loren

🎭 Sophia was the 55th actress to receive an Academy Award; she won the Best Actress Oscar for Two Women (1960) at The 34th Annual Academy Awards (1962) on April 9, 1962.

She is also one of 14 Best Actress Oscar winners to have not accepted their Academy Award in person. "I decided that I could not bear the ordeal of sitting in plain view of millions of viewers while my fate was being judged. If I lost, I might faint for disappointment. If I won, I would also very likely faint with joy. I decided it would be better to faint at home." - Sophia Loren

💫 What inspires me about Sophia is that she is beautiful inside and out.

"Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical." - Sophia Loren

Summer Fitlife Pt. 2

Lightweight & high rep

Don't feel self conscious if you have to start with lighter weights—working out is all about finding what works best for you! Some days I prefer really challenging myself by lifting heavy and other days I like lighter weights at a higher volume to focus on form.

Here's a little leg circuit that could be modified either way!

Deadlifts - 12 reps
Squats - 12 reps
Squat-to-Curtsy Squat - 10 each side
Rainbows - 20 reps
repeat 3 or 4 times through!

Summer Fitlife

Summer Fitlife Tip: Be consistent!

If you don't have hours to spend in the gym just focus on a few body parts, mind-muscle connection and proper form. My fitlife approach is based on working with my mom, a professional trainer and 10+ years of ballet training. I like to think of weightlifting movements as choreography and work up to compound movements that piece it all together.

Here's a little circuit you can do in the comfort of your own home (or backyard) with dumbbells.

Bicep Curls—3 sets of 10-12 reps
Runner's Lunge with Hammer Curls—3 sets of 10-12 reps
Walking Lunges with Hammer Curl into Shoulder Press—3 sets of 10
Seated Shoulder Press—3 sets of 10-12 reps

Bicep Curls—Start with feet shoulder width apart and a slide bend in the knees. Grip dumbbells with your palms facing away, keep upper arms stationery and lift the weights up towards your shoulders until biceps are fully contracted. Hold for a second to engage the muscles. Be sure to release slowly.

Runner's Lunge with Hammer Curls—Put most of your weight into your front foot and bend your knee at 90 degree angle. Grip the dumbells with your palms facing your torso, keep upper arms stationery and curl the weights up to your shoulders. Be sure to hold for a second to engage muscles and release back down slowly. (Be careful to keep core engaged and not rock back and forth too much, core stability is very important in this position).

Now that we've activated biceps, quads and core we build up to our compound movement...

Walking Lunge with Hammer Curl into Shoulder Press—Lunge forward putting your weight in your front foot at a 90 degree angle. Activate biceps with bicep or hammer curls and shift into a shoulder press transitioning the palms away from you when they reach the shoulder and releasing the weights carefully back down. Release the back legs and step into the next lunge. Challenge yourself further by engaging your core and not putting weight on your feet while alternating sides.

Seated Shoulder Press—Use a chair if you don't have a bench handy. Sit with legs hip width apart and feet flat on the ground, back is straight and core is engaged. Lift weights from beside your shoulders upwards above your head with palms facing out. Hold at the top to engage muscles, releasing slowly to starting position.

A Beauty Journey

I have not always been a beauty enthusiast. In fact, I used to be totally content buying the same few things over and over again accepting the idea that I was not much of a "makeup girl". Putting on makeup was just another to-do in my morning; not something I looked forward to.

That changed after going through a difficult personal time. Each and every one of us are bound to go through times when we do not feel our best. Tough times can be unpredictable—making the simple act of getting out of bed each morning feel daunting. In the midst of my own difficult time, I felt overwhelmed and unable to picture myself happy again.

With every challenge, there is a way out and an opportunity to learn and grow. For me, getting out of this phase was all about discovering beauty! I started by watching makeup tutorials on YouTube, observing influencers transform into more beautiful, vibrant versions of themselves. Beauty wasn't just something to watch, it was something I could connect with and make my own. Over time, this newfound ritual became the most therapeutic part of my day. Even if the makeup wasn't perfect, it was an experience that made me genuinely happier and more confident facing the world. I've recently starting taking photos and writing about the products I use as a way of sharing my beauty journey with others.

Scroll down for a few thoughts on some of the new pieces I've been trying:

A Fresh Fleeting Fragrance - 'Arizona' by Proenza Schouler
This scent was inspired by designers' Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez trip to Arizona. It is the first and only to include an unusual flower, white cactus, which only blooms one night once a year. I love that designers put so much of a story into it's creation and was lucky enough to meet them at the Saks Fifth Avenue launch party. This fragrance is one of my new favorites and I've been wearing it for special occasions (mostly at night!)

Drugstore Blush that Delivers - Bella Bellini Baked Powder Blush by Milani
I wasn't always into blush but after watching Kylie Jenner's Vogue Makeup tutorial and seeing how it really brightened up her face I decided it may be time to find a new one that I actually like. Though I planned to do research and get one at Sephora, the Milani Baked Powder Blush at CVS caught my eye. I am pleasantly surprised by this blush and find it comparable to the Nars 'Orgasm' one. Glad I tried this!

Pin Curls with Forever 21 Curlers
Sometimes I turn to the past for inspiration. For a fun, retro look I blowdried my hair and styled with pin-curls. It was a nice alternative to using a straightener or a curler because it's much less heat—I let it set for about an hour and took it down for soft, voluminous waves. I'm really drawn to the pin-up girl style lately and plan on recreating more of these looks.

Wet n' Wild Megalo Highlighting Powder in Precious Petals
Still deciding if I like this, will update after I try it a few more times :)

next day hanacure.JPG

au naturel 🌸

the morning after the Korean face mask I tried

First saw Hanacure on PopSugar and hadn't tried a new face mask in a while so I figured why not? This mask will work differently on everyone but here are my thoughts on it...

The Hanacure Multi-Action Treatment Mask 🧖🏻‍♀️ was inspired by the lotus flower—"In Asian culture, the lotus flower represents rebirth and purity as it emerges from murky waters to blossom anew each day. The flowers remain pure, clean, and untouched despite its adverse surroundings."

What does it do?
1.) Absorb and discharge impurities in your pores 2.) Release Soothing Botanicals and Peptides into skin 3.) Lift and tighten skin

How does it feel?
Cool (temperature-wise), strange and good! Could definitely feel the mask working after 10 minutes and by 30 minutes it was super tight on my face. After washing it off my skin was a little sensitive and flushed.

Does it work?
The first thing I noticed was the next day was that the worry lines on my forehead had faded a lot (kind of like a mini botox)! Overall, my skin was smoother to the touch.

Tried this mask a second and a third time with similar results—may try a few others before deciding if I'll get this one again.

You may remember Jen from a holiday post a few months back.  For this shoot we wanted to do a combination of classic Beacon Hill and 'personal but professional' shots she could use for real estate work.  Since we first lived together on Beacon Hill (almost 10 years ago) walking around there with her was reminiscent of the old days.  She came prepared with a some colorful looks that really popped against the grey and brick architecture.  Click through the gallery for more and follow her Instagram @jencollotta_realestate if you are in-market for a new place.
